Recently I’ve been having a ball working with my long time friend, Jane Deuber, who also consults with entrepreneurs. While I specialize in sales and launching and re-launching businesses, she is brilliant at strategizing to discover and create multiple streams of income, including passive income, as well as amazing online marketing strategies.

In June Jane and I presented a live event, the Profit Builder’s Summit, in Monterey, CA and the response was amazing! Jane shared quite a bit about her struggles in building several million-dollar companies. I too had my share of challenges building my million-dollar business and it’s one of my goals to help our clients avoid those pitfalls. To that end, Jane offered strategies to help entrepreneurs reach their goals more directly.

But with all that, do you know what we learned is an even bigger concern for our clients? The challenge of living the life they want while building their business to reach their goals.

When we start our businesses it’s often all-consuming. Like a child, we want our business to be brilliant, self-sufficient and successful. So we pour ourselves into it. Then one day (hopefully) we wake up to discover that we want a great quality of life just as much. And there’s the challenge.

How do we do that? Many of us didn’t plan our businesses to support our own lives, along with our employees and customers. We were simply in survival mode. And for any of you who have hit this wall, you know the difficulty in trying to put proper processes and procedures in place to give yourself a break from the overwhelm.

So I ask you – what is the true cost to your life of running your business? If you can’t answer, right now, that the cost is completely worth it, I strongly recommend that you take a hard look at where you can make the changes necessary to incorporate your life into your business plan. If you don’t do it now, you will one day when you least expect it because your life tends to move forward whether you acknowledge its existence or not.

I often think it’s important to present a perfect image to a client or potential customer. I say “often” because as much as I’d like to always present that perfect image, there are times when real life happens and perfection is simply not possible. But even so, you still must make a presentation or court a new prospect.

Have you ever had “one of those days”? Your allergies flare up, one of your kids has to be picked up at school unexpectedly, your spouse remembers to tell you about that bounced check. I think you know what I mean. Sometimes it’s hard to appear perfect as you feel your facade begin to crumble.

I say, be real! You are not perfect and neither is the person you are talking to. It’s OK for your clients to know you are human, and therefore, approachable. When you are honest, apologetic, and not whiny about an issue that creates something less than a perfect presentation, your prospect will not fault you for being “real”.

I believe you must always be professional, but I think you can be real at the same time. You can let people see the person behind the professional. Just remember, they want to meet the you that your friends know and love, not the you your spouse gets to see on your bad days.

People buy from those they know, like and trust. I think that requires that you let your prospects get to know some of the real you.


Put some of your real self into your sales meetings and presentations and you’ll find your prospects more likely to do business with you.

Have you ever tried to talk with a potential customer and you couldn’t get them to “warm up” to you? It’s frustrating and can lengthen your sales process exponentially, or even result in no sale and no follow up opportunity. Sometimes it seems as if you are each speaking a different language!

If you have not found some common ground on which to relate to your prospect, you ARE speaking a different language. Until you can find something to which your lead can relate, you have no common language. If your prospect isn’t immediately interested in your product or service, or you are meeting them at a networking event and not within a sales call setting, it can be particularly difficult to find that common ground.

You need to be observant to the clues you are being given. Who did the person come in with? What do you have in common with that person? Do they have an accent you recognize? Clues may be subtle, but they are always there. Train yourself to recognize and react to them.

Of course you need to practice your skills in asking leading questions. The kind of questions that draw out the information you seek. “Chatting” is not the same thing. You may appear to be only chatting, but in fact, you are leading the conversation in the direction you desire.

There is always one sure-fire way to relate to any prospect. It’s powerful and it works. I’ll tell you what it is, but you MUST be sure that it is always a true statement and that you are sincere when you offer it. Ready?

Find something about the person that you can compliment – and then do so. Everyone has something about themselves that you can admire or appreciate.  This sometimes requires being extra observant, but if you practice this skill, you can always find something.

Why is this so powerful? When you compliment someone on their appearance, style, accessories, manners, etc. you are demonstrating to them how smart you are. Think about it from their point of view. If you compliment me, you are observing something about me that I have purchased, worn or in some way created about myself. If you notice and appreciate it, I’ll agree with you (of course!) and think you’re brilliant for noticing. And now we have common ground.

Sometimes the best business building skills are subtle. But subtle is no less powerful. If you don’t make the connection, you never get the opportunity to get the business.

I was excited at the opportunity to present my Business Building Through Sales program for a client’s company retreat recently. Wait! Don’t stop reading!

I know that to many of you “sales” is a dirty word. I’ve practically stopped saying the word because I watch your eyes glaze over when I do.

Sales are absolutely necessary if you expect to make money in any endeavor. Whether you offer a product or a service, if sales don’t happen, you don’t make money.

This does not mean you have to make the sale, but it does mean you have to provide for sales to take place.

Now that you’re off the hook personally, may I continue?

There are a number of ways you can position your business to make sales without doing it yourself. The first is obviously that you can hire someone else to do it.

I believe those who excel at sales are entrepreneurs, even if they work for someone else. A true sales professional must maintain his or her own prospects, motivation and follow up in order to succeed. They are also competitive – with others and with themselves. If you need someone to sell your product or service, talk with a “real” salesperson. Negotiate how you can compensate your salesperson when they perform and you don’t have to be out of pocket from the start.

You can make your business sell for you.
This takes some imagination and creativity, but those are characteristics that make others want to do business with you, so they are worth pursuing. For example, if you have an office or a storefront, can your prospects easily and completely understand what you offer if they walk by and you are closed? If you only have a sign with your name on the front, they probably can’t tell.
Suppose you are an attorney or a CPA or a doctor. Your expertise might seem obvious. Unfortunately, your name and credentials alone don’t guarantee that your potential customer understands in which areas you specialize.

Why is that clarity important? Two main reasons are that (1) a person who sees your specialty may realize that it is important to talk to someone who truly understands their issue and call you and (2) neither you nor the client wastes time making an appointment to discuss something you can’t or don’t handle.

Do You Qualify?

Maybe it’s just me, but have you ever spent an hour or more with a potential customer and had a really great conversation? You made your presentation and you just know you nailed it? Truly, things couldn’t have gone better. Then you reach the end, you ask for the sale and your prospect says, “I can completely see the value of what you offer and I know you will deliver on your promises. In fact, I wish I was [choose one] (a) in the market right now for what you offer, (b) able to afford your service, or (c) didn’t have to run all my decisions by the boss who never likes my plans.”

OK, I’m willing to admit I’m the only one who has ever run into this, but I’ll bet I’m not. What was the very first mistake I made? It wasn’t that I didn’t know my service or product offering inside and out. It wasn’t that my presentation wasn’t compelling. I even remembered to ask for the sale!

You know it – I failed to qualify my prospect before I wasted her time and mine in a full presentation which could never result in a sale (i.e., money in my pocket).  Here’s how it happened. She called me and said that a friend had referred her to me. Great! The whole referral-thing is working! I jumped right in and made the appointment for my presentation. And there you have it – I missed a step.

Qualifying your prospect is a critical step you cannot afford to miss. Why? Unless you’re simply looking to practice your presentation skills, spending your time talking to someone who will not buy is a waste of your most profitable hours.

How do you qualify your prospects? Ask them questions that you develop ahead of time. You want your questions to prompt the answers you need. For example, if you offer business building expertise that helps your clients make more money (like I do), you’ll want to know what kind of business your prospect owns or manages and what types of challenges they’re experiencing. Make certain that what you offer can really help before you spend their time meeting with you. Ask if they are willing to invest in growing their business. If your prospect simply wants to “chat” or “vent” about how things are going and has no intention of making changes, you’ve just lost a profitable hour – or more.

It can take practice to do well at qualifying your leads. But every time you leave a meeting where you realize you’ll never get the business, take a moment to determine what questions you could have asked up front that would prevent you from wasting your time.

What Do You Do?

I’ve been asking this question often lately as I coach business owners working to increase their client base and their sales. Seems like an easy question to answer, doesn’t it? Maybe it is easy, but is it effective?

Think about the responses you receive when you tell others what you do. Do you get a nod of the head, with an “uh huh”? Or, do you hear a question, like, “Really? How do you do that?”

Your goal when you are promoting your business – and you are always promoting your business – is to create interest in the other person. When they have no immediate response, you know you have not been effective at piquing their interest and you have lost an opportunity to share your expertise with another person.

Ah, but you say, maybe they don’t need what I do. That’s certainly possible. But unless they live in a vacuum, they likely know at least one other person who can use your product or service. When you make an impression on someone else, you are remembered. And when that impression is memorable, they will talk about it with someone else.

The best way to make that great impression is to speak to the needs of the other person. Obviously, if you’ve just met, you might not know anything about them, but you do know what benefits your service provides to the majority of your clients. Use that as your starting point.

Here’s an example. My husband is a truly gifted fine art landscape photographer. You’ve read that sentence and you now have an idea of what he does. But what does he provide to his clients? He provides photographs that speak to your soul; creating a feeling of calm, peace and wonder in your life. Think carefully about what you really provide to your clients and customers and make sure that you are saying it to everyone you meet. What do you do?

Don’t Take That Tone With Me!

I don’t know about you, but I am getting more and more annoyed by those folks who are in a service business – or any business at all – and believe that how they’re feeling is more important than providing their customer with the best possible service.

Has this ever happened to you? You’re shopping in person, or talking with a customer service person on the phone, and you get “attitude”. You parents certainly know what I’m talking about. It’s that tone of voice, often accompanied by a big sigh, that makes you acutely aware your presence is not welcome. Rather than feeling like a valued customer, you feel as though you are intruding.

I appreciate that all of us have bad days sometimes and I certainly know that a crisis may be happening in that person’s life. But let me be clear. As a customer of that business, it doesn’t matter to me. As a human being, I am very empathetic to someone’s feelings, but as a customer – perhaps your customer – I care about me. It’s why I’m there.

When you are talking with a customer, or potential customer, the way you present yourself should always be upbeat, knowledgeable and positive, regardless of how you’re feeling. Even if you are unhappy, your customer should never know it. Your job is to be of service and make your customer feel welcome and valued. That is, if you want their continued patronage.

Do you know what your employees are doing? Make sure everyone in your business is on board with this policy or you’ll never know why your best customer failed to come back. I often find that the lowest paid employee, typically the receptionist, is the first contact a customer has with a business, yet they are often the least trained in this critical skill.

So “fake it, ‘til you make it” if you have to. Just be certain to always treat your customers as you would the most prized visitor to your own home. You’ll never have to wonder whether you did everything you could for your customer. Those who are treated like family will forgive a lot and remain your most loyal customers.

Happy New Year and welcome to 2009! Personally, I’m very happy that we’ve embarked on a new year. It gives us the perfect opportunity to review, revise and re-state our goals. I was speaking with a client today and he told me about an author who said 90% of people, when asked what their top life goal was, said it was to “achieve success”.

That got me thinking, especially since being successful is way up there on my list, what is success? If I can’t define it, how will I know when I’ve reached it? I know I am already successful in many areas, but there are still lots of great things I want to achieve.

I suspect that being successful means something different to each of us. Have you truly thought it through? Now is a good time, particularly as you vision your success for 2009. Think about what “success” means for you. Specifically how you will feel, what you will be doing, things you might be saying, etc. when you are successful and then devise your goals to reach that point.

When you have your goals in hand, or “in head”, determine the ways you will accomplish them. I maintain that you can’t do it alone. You’ll need a team of people who support you in different ways. They may be your support at home, or in business, or both. Find those people you can count on to help you reach your goals and then lead them powerfully.

Your team will let you get out there and do what you do best. Concentrate on making the most of your time by spending it on your specific area of expertise. Be persistent, inspired and focused, but not too hard on yourself. You will make mistakes and have failures, but you will learn and move forward.

Don’t be afraid to work with others toward reaching your goals. Working with a team that supports you will keep you on your path and ultimately make you more successful.

What is my primary goal for 2009? It is to be of service to all of you and help you envision and achieve your business success goals. Take advantage of some our existing opportunities and keep an eye out for those coming throughout the year. As business professionals we spend our lives advertising, promoting, marketing and selling to our target market. And hopefully we’ve invested the time and energy into determining exactly who our target market is, or we’re wasting our efforts.

Now that we know who they are, where are they hiding? In a boom market, it’s fairly easy to find our prospects. Many of them come to us on their own, or in response to advertising. We go out, walk around at networking events and, like a magnet, they come to us. Our biggest issue is finding a way to close them.

But in today’s more challenging market, it seems as though our prospects are hiding from us. Like turning your head quickly and catching a glimpse of a little prospect’s head peeking out from behind a closing door. You can almost hear the little prospect saying (quietly), “No, no, don’t talk to me! Don’t make me want to buy something!” Aww, poor little prospect.

They can be more challenging these days, so we need to find another way to get in front of them. Because let’s face it, when you’re great at what you do, you will make the sale if you can just get in front of your customer. We have to be creative about where we network. Don’t ignore the tried and true methods of networking groups, chambers of commerce, Rotary, etc., but now is the time to include other options.

Where does your target market hang out in their free time? What are their hobbies and interests? If they are parents, they are often at the PTA. If they are golfers, they are in the clubhouse. If they are women “of a certain age” they are possibly seeing the doctor who “refreshes” their looks. (I said be creative!)

The bottom line is that you need to be looking for your leads in all the places you go, not simply the ones designed for business. And don’t make it hard on yourself. Use the activities you enjoy to find your prospects. Find other professionals with the same target market and similar interests and create ways to package services or products to offer your buyers. You’ll find that the more often you’re seen and heard, the more often you’ll be thought of when the product or service you offer is required.
