Do You Qualify?

Maybe it’s just me, but have you ever spent an hour or more with a potential customer and had a really great conversation? You made your presentation and you just know you nailed it? Truly, things couldn’t have gone better. Then you reach the end, you ask for the sale and your prospect says, “I can completely see the value of what you offer and I know you will deliver on your promises. In fact, I wish I was [choose one] (a) in the market right now for what you offer, (b) able to afford your service, or (c) didn’t have to run all my decisions by the boss who never likes my plans.”

OK, I’m willing to admit I’m the only one who has ever run into this, but I’ll bet I’m not. What was the very first mistake I made? It wasn’t that I didn’t know my service or product offering inside and out. It wasn’t that my presentation wasn’t compelling. I even remembered to ask for the sale!

You know it – I failed to qualify my prospect before I wasted her time and mine in a full presentation which could never result in a sale (i.e., money in my pocket).  Here’s how it happened. She called me and said that a friend had referred her to me. Great! The whole referral-thing is working! I jumped right in and made the appointment for my presentation. And there you have it – I missed a step.

Qualifying your prospect is a critical step you cannot afford to miss. Why? Unless you’re simply looking to practice your presentation skills, spending your time talking to someone who will not buy is a waste of your most profitable hours.

How do you qualify your prospects? Ask them questions that you develop ahead of time. You want your questions to prompt the answers you need. For example, if you offer business building expertise that helps your clients make more money (like I do), you’ll want to know what kind of business your prospect owns or manages and what types of challenges they’re experiencing. Make certain that what you offer can really help before you spend their time meeting with you. Ask if they are willing to invest in growing their business. If your prospect simply wants to “chat” or “vent” about how things are going and has no intention of making changes, you’ve just lost a profitable hour – or more.

It can take practice to do well at qualifying your leads. But every time you leave a meeting where you realize you’ll never get the business, take a moment to determine what questions you could have asked up front that would prevent you from wasting your time.

What Do You Do?

I’ve been asking this question often lately as I coach business owners working to increase their client base and their sales. Seems like an easy question to answer, doesn’t it? Maybe it is easy, but is it effective?

Think about the responses you receive when you tell others what you do. Do you get a nod of the head, with an “uh huh”? Or, do you hear a question, like, “Really? How do you do that?”

Your goal when you are promoting your business – and you are always promoting your business – is to create interest in the other person. When they have no immediate response, you know you have not been effective at piquing their interest and you have lost an opportunity to share your expertise with another person.

Ah, but you say, maybe they don’t need what I do. That’s certainly possible. But unless they live in a vacuum, they likely know at least one other person who can use your product or service. When you make an impression on someone else, you are remembered. And when that impression is memorable, they will talk about it with someone else.

The best way to make that great impression is to speak to the needs of the other person. Obviously, if you’ve just met, you might not know anything about them, but you do know what benefits your service provides to the majority of your clients. Use that as your starting point.

Here’s an example. My husband is a truly gifted fine art landscape photographer. You’ve read that sentence and you now have an idea of what he does. But what does he provide to his clients? He provides photographs that speak to your soul; creating a feeling of calm, peace and wonder in your life. Think carefully about what you really provide to your clients and customers and make sure that you are saying it to everyone you meet. What do you do?

Don’t Take That Tone With Me!

I don’t know about you, but I am getting more and more annoyed by those folks who are in a service business – or any business at all – and believe that how they’re feeling is more important than providing their customer with the best possible service.

Has this ever happened to you? You’re shopping in person, or talking with a customer service person on the phone, and you get “attitude”. You parents certainly know what I’m talking about. It’s that tone of voice, often accompanied by a big sigh, that makes you acutely aware your presence is not welcome. Rather than feeling like a valued customer, you feel as though you are intruding.

I appreciate that all of us have bad days sometimes and I certainly know that a crisis may be happening in that person’s life. But let me be clear. As a customer of that business, it doesn’t matter to me. As a human being, I am very empathetic to someone’s feelings, but as a customer – perhaps your customer – I care about me. It’s why I’m there.

When you are talking with a customer, or potential customer, the way you present yourself should always be upbeat, knowledgeable and positive, regardless of how you’re feeling. Even if you are unhappy, your customer should never know it. Your job is to be of service and make your customer feel welcome and valued. That is, if you want their continued patronage.

Do you know what your employees are doing? Make sure everyone in your business is on board with this policy or you’ll never know why your best customer failed to come back. I often find that the lowest paid employee, typically the receptionist, is the first contact a customer has with a business, yet they are often the least trained in this critical skill.

So “fake it, ‘til you make it” if you have to. Just be certain to always treat your customers as you would the most prized visitor to your own home. You’ll never have to wonder whether you did everything you could for your customer. Those who are treated like family will forgive a lot and remain your most loyal customers.

Happy New Year and welcome to 2009! Personally, I’m very happy that we’ve embarked on a new year. It gives us the perfect opportunity to review, revise and re-state our goals. I was speaking with a client today and he told me about an author who said 90% of people, when asked what their top life goal was, said it was to “achieve success”.

That got me thinking, especially since being successful is way up there on my list, what is success? If I can’t define it, how will I know when I’ve reached it? I know I am already successful in many areas, but there are still lots of great things I want to achieve.

I suspect that being successful means something different to each of us. Have you truly thought it through? Now is a good time, particularly as you vision your success for 2009. Think about what “success” means for you. Specifically how you will feel, what you will be doing, things you might be saying, etc. when you are successful and then devise your goals to reach that point.

When you have your goals in hand, or “in head”, determine the ways you will accomplish them. I maintain that you can’t do it alone. You’ll need a team of people who support you in different ways. They may be your support at home, or in business, or both. Find those people you can count on to help you reach your goals and then lead them powerfully.

Your team will let you get out there and do what you do best. Concentrate on making the most of your time by spending it on your specific area of expertise. Be persistent, inspired and focused, but not too hard on yourself. You will make mistakes and have failures, but you will learn and move forward.

Don’t be afraid to work with others toward reaching your goals. Working with a team that supports you will keep you on your path and ultimately make you more successful.

What is my primary goal for 2009? It is to be of service to all of you and help you envision and achieve your business success goals. Take advantage of some our existing opportunities and keep an eye out for those coming throughout the year. As business professionals we spend our lives advertising, promoting, marketing and selling to our target market. And hopefully we’ve invested the time and energy into determining exactly who our target market is, or we’re wasting our efforts.

Now that we know who they are, where are they hiding? In a boom market, it’s fairly easy to find our prospects. Many of them come to us on their own, or in response to advertising. We go out, walk around at networking events and, like a magnet, they come to us. Our biggest issue is finding a way to close them.

But in today’s more challenging market, it seems as though our prospects are hiding from us. Like turning your head quickly and catching a glimpse of a little prospect’s head peeking out from behind a closing door. You can almost hear the little prospect saying (quietly), “No, no, don’t talk to me! Don’t make me want to buy something!” Aww, poor little prospect.

They can be more challenging these days, so we need to find another way to get in front of them. Because let’s face it, when you’re great at what you do, you will make the sale if you can just get in front of your customer. We have to be creative about where we network. Don’t ignore the tried and true methods of networking groups, chambers of commerce, Rotary, etc., but now is the time to include other options.

Where does your target market hang out in their free time? What are their hobbies and interests? If they are parents, they are often at the PTA. If they are golfers, they are in the clubhouse. If they are women “of a certain age” they are possibly seeing the doctor who “refreshes” their looks. (I said be creative!)

The bottom line is that you need to be looking for your leads in all the places you go, not simply the ones designed for business. And don’t make it hard on yourself. Use the activities you enjoy to find your prospects. Find other professionals with the same target market and similar interests and create ways to package services or products to offer your buyers. You’ll find that the more often you’re seen and heard, the more often you’ll be thought of when the product or service you offer is required.

I’m finding that our Business Success Mastermind Teams are especially powerful for developing this kind of thinking. By combining professionals in different fields, we are more likely to create out-of-the-box ideas and cross-promotions. The energy and focus that comes out of each mastermind session is propelling everyone to more profits. I strongly recommend masterminding to grow you and your business.

Educating Your Customers

I had two speaking engagements this week and I have to tell you, I love ‘em! I realize many of you are getting chills right now. Those of you who crawled under the bed need to come back out! I have a great time doing these talks and I think a big part of it is because I really love helping business professionals recognize opportunities to make more money.

Regardless of how much we know about our own businesses, as well as marketing, advertising and promotion, we can always learn more. I attend every presentation I can on sales and marketing because I always either learn something new, am reminded of something I want to try or simply become inspired and motivated once again. I believe education should never end. When we stop learning, we stop growing.

I also think that if we believe we know-it-all, that attitude comes across to our prospects and defeats our sales efforts. We may be regarded as pompous, arrogant or even rude. Obviously this is not the goal.

Education is critical in the beginning of the sales process because we need our prospects to truly understand what we offer, how we can be of help to them and what the benefits are of working with us.

Then, we also need to continually educate our existing customers regarding our product, our services and our offers or risk losing them to the competition. Why is this necessary?

Over time, as you develop and expand your business, you will modify or even completely change your offers, your services and your attitudes about all number of things. (Most likely starting with, “What was I thinking when I started this business?!?”) You need to keep your prospects and your clients up on these changes so that when it is time for them to buy (or buy again), they will do so from you. As much as we might wish it, or even expect it, it does not just happen automatically. Stay in touch with your customers and always be willing to provide information to them, even if you think they already know.

If you want to be perceived as the expert in your field – and, trust me, that IS what you want – make sure you find ways to continually educate your prospects and your existing customers about the benefits of your services so you never miss a sales opportunity.

Your Sales Personality (Part One?)

I was shopping recently . . . well, it’s the holidays, who isn’t shopping? Anyway, I was reminded again how seemingly little things can make a huge difference, not only in making a sale, but also keeping a customer for the long term. I’ve been thinking about some of the things that really bother me when I’m shopping in stores and I’ve noticed how these annoyances also apply when talking to anyone about doing business – in a store or not.

I titled this Strategy (Part One?) because I know I won’t have space to list everything I find lacking in sales today. I’m going to start with the first thing that irritates me when I walk in the door and continue from there.

Annoyance #1

Lack of courtesy and politeness. I can’t believe it, but these two critical traits are so often missing when I enter a store that I have to name them first. We’re often not greeted when we enter a store. We’re ignored, or given short, curt answers to our questions. Ask where something is located and we’re answered with an arm pointing in a vague direction. Yeesh! What happened to common courtesy? Don’t tell me I’m old. First, I already know that, but second, this is a failure on many levels. The individual’s upbringing certainly, but also training or education in how to be a sales professional. Too often business owners believe that any “body” is better than no “body” on the sales floor. Not true.

Not to belabor the subject, but how anyone imagines that disregarding good manners can result in a sale, let alone repeat sales, is beyond me. Perhaps they believe there will always be new customers to take my place, but I can assure you that once mistreated, I rarely go back. Would you?

How does this apply to our own sales personalities?

I know you’re all professionals, but I’m going to give us all a good reminder anyway. Always treat your potential customer as you would a guest in your home. Specifically, like you would treat the “good company”. This means that you, your office, your briefcase, your desk, your car, yourself all look like you care what your customer thinks of you. How you present yourself is part of your first impression.

Open your conversations with courteous comments, including a warm hello and a thank you for their inviting or allowing you to speak with them. Find something to compliment (if you have to practice this skill, do it). Make your customer feel welcome and they will welcome you with their attention.

I know you’re all polite when speaking with customers and prospects. I challenge you to also really listen to your tone of voice, your breathing patterns (don’t sigh when they say something not-so-bright), and the way you speak to others who work with them. How you treat others demonstrates how you will treat your prospect once they become your customer.

Essentially, take the lessons we learned at home and bring them to work each day. That is, play nicely with others, make friends and don’t hit your brother. (Maybe that last one was just my mom.) Be your very best self, on your best behavior and you won’t have to worry about making a good impression. You can concentrate on getting the Yes!

Thank Them All – Often!

This week of the Thanksgiving holiday has me thinking about giving thanks. It seems only natural. I have so many things to be thankful for this year. My husband came through major surgery with flying colors, my family is intact and healthy and my business is doing  well. I am very blessed and lucky.

Did I forget anyone? You bet. Let’s start with all of you! My clients, friends and colleagues who let me share some of myself every week. I love hearing your comments and feedback. I also appreciate that you don’t (seem to!) mind me pushing you to do more, or do something differently or more often. You all take it in stride with good humor and I thank you for that. I sincerely appreciate working with each of you because it makes me feel so good! I have such fun and get so much energy from sharing ideas and strategies with you. Working with all of you makes me better.

I think perhaps I don’t tell you that often enough. It may be a common mistake for all of us. Do you remember to tell your clients, your co-workers, your employees, your vendors and your colleagues how much you appreciate them and why? It’s so easy to take each other for granted, especially when things are going well. But that’s the most important time to do it. And you know, if you remember to thank those around you regularly, you’ll find that they are willing to help you out of a jam, pitch in on a project or simply be a joy to be around. That can make your week smoother!

Take a minute (or more!) to tell those around you how much you appreciate their efforts and name some specific things you notice. What you notice gets done and what you appreciate happens more. That’s what I call a win-win strategy!

I spent last weekend at a great event put on by Loral Langemeier and the Live Out Loud team. Although wealth building is why you’re familiar with Loral (read “The Millionaire Maker” book), every action we took this weekend revolved around networking. It’s the biggest reason I flew across the country (on a red-eye flight no less!) to attend. I was not disappointed. The networking opportunities were vast and I remembered an important lesson.

Practice your pitch! I wrote recently about how practice makes profit Sales Strategy #12 but I want to specifically stress practicing your pitch. Since we know that we only get one chance to make a first impression, that first “pitch” or opportunity to tell someone who we are and what we do, is critical.

I’ve spent the past year creating, revising and fine-tuning my pitch and yet I modified it even further during this event. Why? Because I had the opportunity to tell it over and over again to many people in a short amount of time and see their reactions. It was extremely beneficial because seeing the “results” of my pitch immediately, I was able to test different revisions with instant feedback.

What are you looking for in the person you “pitch”? I want to see their eyes light up! I look for them to be excited, to lean in and ask more about what I do. Each time that happens, I know I’ve hit the mark and made an impression on my fellow networker.

Right now is the perfect time to practice your pitch as often as possible. My good friend, Mary Jeanne Vincent, owner of Workwise and a fantastic career coach, recently wrote an article pointing out that during this holiday season the opportunities to network are amazing. Between business events, holiday parties and even neighborhood gatherings, the chances to present your pitch are multiplied. Take advantage of them and go to every place possible to network.

Don’t worry if you’re not completely confident in your pitch yet. If you wait until it’s “perfect”, you’ll never present it! Just keep practicing and carefully gauging the response you receive. The more often you make a true connection, the more you’ll gain confidence that you have the perfect pitch!
